    Improving the performance of swift-water rescue quick release harnesses

    This paper considered the effectiveness of empathic design modifications to quick release harness design. It was found that the critical element in effecting a rapid and efficient release was the tape length distal to the buckle/back-bar components. We have concluded that the length of tape pulled through the buckle and the loading of the buckle/ tri-glide are critical to ensure an effective release. Physical separation of tape and buckle mechanism when the harness is released is crucial to the effective release. We then considered the problems this may pose in multiple user situations such as ‘call out’ teams or training use and we propose that the adaptation utilised in the research harness to facilitate testing may provide a simple and low cost solution to the multiple user problem allowing easy adjustment of the harness to ensure the separation of buckle and tape on release. We conclude by outlining the design adaptations and recommendations for the training and use of the quick release harness and make recommendations for the training of QRH use

    Raft on a highline: Loads and trim

    This study examines the loads associated with the positioning of a 4.5m raft on a high line in moving water. Testing was conducted within a flow-calibrated channel demonstrating representative stream velocities typical (0.6 – 5.4ms/ also MPH) of those encountered during water related rescues. The raft was positioned from a high line mid-stream, and a load cell was utilised to collect force/time data. The independent variables of trim (relative positioning of the load within the boat) and average stream velocity were investigated. The findings challenge assumptions regarding the impact of trim on the loads within a highline, the relationship between flow rate and loads on highline and make recommendation for training and practice. The study contributes to understanding the loads placed on high lines by representative rafts during operational rescues

    Power, Pathological Worldviews, and the Strengths Perspective in Social Work

    This article takes up Blundo’s (2001) assertion in this journal that in order to practice from the strengths perspective, social workers need to alter their “frames.” Expanding on this assertion, we specify a particular frame that requires change: a pathological worldview. Examining the strengths perspective with regard to a Foucauldian analysis of power, we argue that to thoroughly implement the strengths perspective, we need to consider the dividing practices that allow us to maintain power and that reflect a pathological worldview. This article provides considerations for social work practice that will be of interest to practicing social workers and social work educators interested in continuing to develop their strengths-based practice

    Apparent bypass of negative selection in CD8+ tumours in CD2-myc transgenic mice.

    A role for antigen stimulation in lymphoid neoplasia has been postulated and is supported by indirect evidence that suggests that the interaction of antigen with both T cells and B cells may constitute an epigenetic event that can contribute to tumour induction or tumour progression. Using myc-bearing transgenic mice that develop mainly clonal T-cell lymphomas we have investigated the possibility that endogenous antigen-mediated clonal deletion might be overridden in tumorigenesis. CD2-myc transgenic mice were backcrossed on to a CBA/Ca background to ensure Mtv-mediated deletion of V beta 11-expressing T cells in the resultant offspring. Lymphomas arising from these mice were subsequently screened for V beta 11 expression. There was a clear correlation between the age at which mice developed neoplasia and the tumour phenotype. Mice with CD4- CD8+ tumours succumbed to thymic lymphoma at a significantly younger age than mice developing CD4+ CD8+ tumours. A small number of tumours consisted of the 'forbidden' V beta 11 phenotype, showing that cells vulnerable to transformation could escape negative selection. The majority of the V beta 11-positive tumours were CD4- CD8+ and were only observed in mice showing clinical evidence of tumour development at a relatively young age. The phenotype of these cells and the age at which tumours arose suggests that T cells escaping tolerance may be susceptible to transformation

    Autism in England: assessing underdiagnosis in a population- based cohort study of prospectively collected primary care data

    Background: Autism has long been viewed as a paediatric condition, meaning that many autistic adults missed out on a diagnosis as children when autism was little known. We estimated numbers of diagnosed and undiagnosed autistic people in England, and examined how diagnostic rates differed by socio-demographic factors. Methods: This population-based cohort study of prospectively collected primary care data from IQVIA Medical Research Data (IMRD) compared the prevalence of diagnosed autism to community prevalence to estimate underdiagnosis. 602,433 individuals registered at an English primary care practice in 2018 and 5,586,100 individuals registered between 2000 and 2018 were included. Findings: Rates of diagnosed autism in children/young people were much higher than in adults/older adults. As of 2018, 2.94% of 10- to 14-year-olds had a diagnosis (1 in 34), vs. 0.02% aged 70+ (1 in 6000). Exploratory projections based on these data suggest that, as of 2018, 463,500 people (0.82% of the English population) may have been diagnosed autistic, and between 435,700 and 1,197,300 may be autistic and undiagnosed (59–72% of autistic people, 0.77%–2.12% of the English population). Age-related inequalities were also evident in new diagnoses (incidence): c.1 in 250 5- to 9-year-olds had a newly-recorded autism diagnosis in 2018, vs. c.1 in 4000 20- to 49-year-olds, and c.1 in 18,000 people aged 50+. Interpretation: Substantial age-related differences in the proportions of people diagnosed suggest an urgent need to improve access to adult autism diagnostic services.     Interfacial separation between elastic solids with randomly rough surfaces: comparison between theory and numerical techniques

    We study the distribution of interfacial separations P(u) at the contact region between two elastic solids with randomly rough surfaces. An analytical expression is derived for P(u) using Persson's theory of contact mechanics, and is compared to numerical solutions obtained using (a) a half-space method based on the Boussinesq equation, (b) a Green's function molecular dynamics technique and (c) smart-block classical molecular dynamics. Overall, we find good agreement between all the different approaches.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure
